Remembering my trip to Slovenia

Way back in July, I was a guest at my friend’s wedding, who decided to get married at the wonderful Lake Bled in Slovenia. If you’ve never been, I can’t recommend it enough!

Bled is somewhere I’d have never even thought of going for a holiday, never mind getting married there; but if you go when the weather is good, it’s such a picturesque place that I absolutely loved. It’s only 2 hours flight to Ljubjana from from Manchester, so it wasn’t too hard to get to either.

The area itself is quite small, however there’s loads to do around the Lake area itself – in the Lake you can hire kayaks (double or single), go on boat trips across to the little church on the island in the middle (we did this as part of the wedding ceremony), or you can hire mountain bikes and ride around the lake yourself, stopping for a drink along the way. We hired a mix of normal bikes and electric bikes between us; having never been on an e-bike it was so strange to have the effort taken out of it for you.

It costs 10 euros to cross the lake on these little wooden boats

The food in the area is quite Italian inspired – mainly Pasta, Pizza etc., along with a few local dishes. We looked on tripadvisor for the best places to go, and spent ages one night queuing to get into “Pizza Rustika”, the wait was well worth it though – we opted for a pizza with rocket on:

Away from the restaurants, if you’re going around the lake you’ll find lots of little huts selling ice cream, pretzels, pancakes etc., for about 3 euros each. It was stinking hot when we were there, so the mango ice cream went down a treat.

Moving on from me stuffing my face, the real reason we were there was for Brian & Lucy’s wedding –  part of the local tradition is to carry your bride up these stairs! as Lucy was pregnant, this wasn’t the best idea, so Brian just did the last step.

If you’re an outdoors type person it’s the ideal location; especially if you love hiking up hill (the steps up to the castle nearly killed me!). I’m definitely going to try and go back next year, maybe for 4 days so I can have a day sunbathing on the Lake, and there’s a fantastic looking kayaking trip to Bohinj that we never go to go on. I just need to start saving for it in January (December is a write off with Christmas coming!).
